OK, we finally planted the bulbs, not uneventfully! It seems a lusty band of yellow jackets (Oh how they hate that pejorative term!) have an outpost about 5 inches from the farther edge of the bulb bed we dug. They came out and fired some warning shots when we dug roots too close to them. We backed off respectfully, brought in the bag of potting soil to cover over the not-so-great soil, and dug in the bulbs and the hosta. We stuck in a plastic border to hold the dirt in place and keep it from streaming out onto the sidewalk (the spot is sloped down to the walk). Hope it works!
